Pay by Bank
InternalIn reviewThe launch pack for Pay by Bank: customers pay a business directly from their bank account through a guided journey, without entering card details.
Pay by Bank deposits in a wallet: where a one-time payment or a saved account belongs, what to tell customers before each step, and how to recover when something fails.
Overview
This pack covers Pay by Bank deposits for digital wallets: topping up a balance or funding a transfer.
Deposits are repeat-use by nature, but trust is earned progressively. Customers may top up often over time, yet still approach their first interactions as one-off, high-attention events. A mismatch between the customer’s intent and the authorisation model is the main cause of friction, abandonment and mistrust in Pay by Bank flows.
The two mechanisms, SIP and AoF, are explained on the Pay by Bank overview. The aim is not to promote one over the other, but to place each where it best matches the customer’s intent.
Mechanisms in a deposit journey
| SIP | AoF Push (customer-initiated) | AoF Pull (merchant or system-initiated) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Typical deposit intent | First top-up | Repeat top-up | Balance maintenance |
| Initiation | Customer | Customer | System or merchant |
| Customer presence | Required at payment consent and initiation. Consent is per payment. | Required at consent setup and at payment. To prevent fraud, add authentication such as a PIN or biometrics when making a payment. | Required at consent setup, not at payment. To prevent fraud, add authentication such as a PIN or biometrics when this mechanism is enabled. |
| App-to-app redirect authorisation | Per payment | Once. Standing, bounded consent | Once. Standing, bounded consent |
| UX goal | Complete the task safely | Reduce repeat friction | Reliability and predictability |
For wallets, AoF Push is the primary optimisation target after a successful SIP payment. AoF Pull needs higher trust, clearer controls and stronger recovery patterns.
Words for this use case
Deposits use the wallet-funding words from Use-case substitutions: top up, add money, wallet balance. Confirm the payment separately from the balance being available.
Customer-facing wording comes from Messaging, which PMM leads. Where a guideline still carries Design’s draft wording, it is marked “Draft wording, awaiting PMM”.
Placement
Where each mechanism belongs, based on the customer’s intent.
Entry points
Top-up entry
MustEstablish the deposit intent clearly where the customer starts a top-up, before any payment method is chosen.
Pay by Bank option
MustShow Pay by Bank as a payment method that sets the expectation of paying from the bank. Use the name Pay by Bank in the selector, never Instant Bank Transfer, Bank Transfer or another name (Payment method name).

Completing a deposit
First deposit: default to a one-time payment
Default to Pay by Bank with SIP when no account is on file. The customer is trying to complete a task, not to configure long-term permissions.

Returning deposit: default to the saved account
If an account is saved, default to One Tap deposits. Always allow changing the payment method, but do not ask every time.

After a successful deposit: offer to save the account
Confirm success first. Only then suggest saving the account as an optimisation for next time.

Auto top-ups
Draft wording, awaiting PMMIf your business logic and app support auto top-ups, only use AoF. Always notify customers when a payment will be taken, and once it is confirmed. Let customers stop auto top-ups, and provide a reversal mechanism where applicable.
Messaging says saving an account never sets up automatic payments. Auto top-ups (AoF Pull) are the exception, and need their own wording from PMM before launch.
Setup and commitment
After KYC onboarding
Offer saving an account as a way to make future deposits easier. Always allow skipping.
Account setup or first payment method
Use AoF as the primary option. This context signals future intent.
Payment methods and settings
Draft wording, awaiting PMMWhen a card or another bank is already set up, position saving the bank account as an upgrade. Never migrate automatically.
Add your bank for faster top-ups.
Moving from the legacy journey
Customers who paid with the legacy bank-payment journey must set up again: it is a new journey, not a rename. Keep Pay by Bank as the label in the payment method selector, with the old name as temporary supporting text only for customers who saw it (Transitioning from “Instant Bank Transfer”).
Pay by Bank Previously shown as Instant Bank Transfer
Make setting up again the primary action, and do not treat these customers as first-time users.

Recovery
A failed one-time payment shows a human-readable error, with a retry or another way to fund (DEP-PTH-02). A failed saved-account payment falls back to a one-time payment with the same bank where possible (DEP-PTH-06).
Priming
Priming sets expectations at every touchpoint, in the app and outside it. It answers three questions:
- What is about to happen?
- What control does the customer keep?
- What will the future look like?
Messages outside the app prime the same moments as the screens. Their copy is in the Copy library, by customer scenario.
In the app
One-time payment priming (after selection)
MustA one-time payment needs priming the first time. Customers still need to understand what happens next before they leave the app. Set three expectations:
- They will be redirected to their banking app or website.
- The approval applies only to this amount.
- They will come back to the app once the payment is completed or cancelled.

Wording, from Mandatory inclusions:
Approve the payment securely through your bank. You will then return here for confirmation.

Saved-account priming (before the SDK)
MustExplain the benefit (One Tap next time), that saving is optional, and that the connection can be removed anytime. Keep limits out of this explanation; if limits apply, show them separately (DEP-PRI-03).
Wording, from One Tap and returning payments:
Choose to save your bank account for One Tap payments next time. You choose when to pay and can remove the connection anytime.

Changed from the Notion version, which explained the boundary (limits) here and suggested “You can control your amounts or cancel this anytime.” Messaging keeps limits out of the payment-permission explanation, and PMM leads the wording.

Limit awareness (conditional)
MustDraft wording, awaiting PMMWhere saved-account limits apply, tell the customer before consent, so a limit never surprises them at payment. Keep it separate from the explanation of saving (DEP-PRI-02).
Open with PMM: how and where to show limits, given that Messaging keeps them out of the payment-permission explanation.

From a one-time payment to a saved account
Anchor the value to the next deposit. When the customer returns from the bank, make sure they understand the outcome of the payment before suggesting they save the account. If you can, tailor the message to the bank they just paid with.
Wording, from the save-an-account scenario:
The Pay by Bank payments you know, now simpler next time.
Primary action: Save my account for One Tap.

Replaces “Pay in a single tap next time”: the returning experience is called One Tap.

Card-to-bank recovery
When a card expires or fails, use a BIN lookup to position Pay by Bank as continuity, and take the customer straight to the specific Pay by Bank method.
Wording, from Key end-user benefits:
No card details to type. No CVV or OTP to enter. Pay directly from your bank.

Replaces the earlier examples. “At no extra fees” and “instantly” are claims Messaging asks to verify for each client before use.

Pathways
How the journey behaves when things don’t go perfectly. The core rule: every failure state must keep the customer moving forward.

Returning to the app
Success return
MustReinforce completion before any optimisation. State the payment status explicitly, and confirm the payment separately from the balance being available (Payment-status copy).

Saved-account failures
Fall back to a one-time payment
MustDraft wording, awaiting PMMWhen a saved-account payment fails, subject to the error states available, fall back to a one-time payment with the same bank where possible, so the customer only has to approve and continue.
We couldn’t make this payment right now. Let’s approve it from your bank.
Approaching saved-account limits

MustDraft wording, awaiting PMMAvoid repeated rejection loops: say that the limit is set by the customer’s bank, and how to change it.
Your payment amount is higher than your bank limits, please adjust the limits on your bank app and try again.
Explaining split payments
MustDraft wording, awaiting PMMWhere a saved-account payment is taken as several debits, explain why, so the customer is not surprised by them.

Consent expiry
MustTell customers in advance when their consent is about to expire, at a moment you know they use the app, to keep momentum. If it expires during a payment, ask them to reconnect.
Wording, from the save-an-account campaign rules:
Reconnect for One Tap. Connect your bank again to use eligible One Tap payments.
